• [Ezr 9:9] O Jerusalem The Blissful

  O Jerusalem the blissful, home of gladness yet untold, Thou whose countless throngs triumphal fill with joy thy street of gold Graven on thee, new and glorious, they the King’s own Name behold! Many are thy sons, O mother, yon august and shining band! Gentle peace in all thy borders makes thee glad, O happy land! Perfect is thy restoration, bright in holiness to stand. Here, a figure of the heavenly, shines our temple, worthier grown By its richer restoration on the old foundation stone. With a majesty and beauty to the former house unknown. Lord, we pray Thee, Master Builder, great and holy, enter in, Fill Thy sanctuary quickly, as our hallowing rites begin, And Thyself its Consecrator rest for evermore therein. Make Thy servants, though unworthy, temples of Thy grace to be; Let us not in flesh or spirit prove disloyal unto Thee, But in dedicated service praise Thy Name adoringly. Make, O royal Priest, Thine altar here henceforth a throne of light, Ever held in highest honor, and with many a gift made bright, Ever blessèd, ever peaceful, ever precious in Thy sight. Yea, our hearts, for these Thou judgest, as Thy cleansèd altars bless, By Thy Spirit’s grace renew us unto perfect holiness, And the sevenfold gifts from Heaven grant us ever to possess. Now to Thee, through endless ages, O most holy Trinity, Highest honor, power unmeasured, everlasting glory be; God for ever and for ever, Three in One, and One in Three.

• [Ayb 42:6] I Bow My Forehead To The Dust

  I bow my forehead to the dust, I veil mine eyes for shame, And urge, in trembling self distrust, A prayer without a claim. No offering of mine own I have, Nor works my faith to prove; I can but give the gifts He gave, And plead His love for love. I dimly guess, from blessings known, Of greater out of sight; And, with the chastened psalmist, own His judgments too are right. And if my heart and flesh are weak To bear an untried pain, The bruiséd reed He will not break, But strengthen and sustain. I know not what the future hath Of marvel or surprise, Assured alone that life and death His mercy underlies. And so beside the silent sea I wait the muffled oar; No harm from Him can come to me On ocean or on shore. I know not where His islands lift Their fronded palms in air; I only know I cannot drift Beyond His love and care; And Thou, O Lord, by Whom are seen Thy creatures as they be, Forgive me if too close I lean My human heart on Thee.

  Prostrate, dear Jesus, at Thy feet, A guilty rebel lies; And upwards to Thy mercy seat, Presumes to lift his eyes. If tears of sorrow would suffice To pay the debt I owe, Tears should from both my weeping eyes In ceaseless torrents flow. But no such sacrifice I plead To expiate my guilt; No tears but those which Thou hast shed No blood, but Thou hast spilt. Think of Thy sorrows, dearest Lord, And all my sins forgive: Justice will well approve the word That bids the sinner live.

  Alas! my God! my sins are great, My conscience doth upbraid me; And now I find that at my strait No man hath power to aid me. And fled I hence, in my despair, In some lone spot to hide me, My griefs would still be with me there, Thy hand still hold and guide me. Nay, Thee I seek—I merit naught, Yet pity and restore me; Be not Thy wrath, just God, my lot, Thy Son hath suffered for me. If pain and woe must follow sin, Then be my path still rougher, Here spare me not; if Heaven I win, On earth I gladly suffer. But curb my heart, forgive my guilt, Make Thou my patience firmer, For they must miss the good Thou wilt, Who at Thy teachings murmur. Then deal with me as seems Thee best, Thy grace will help me bear it, If but at last I see Thy rest, And with my Savior share it.

  O the darkness, O the sorrow, O the misery of sin! When will dawn the promised morrow That shall bring deliverance in? One there was ordained to languish, Guiltless, in Gethsemane; One there was Who died in anguish Innocent, on Calvary. Jesus was the Burden-bearer, God’s own Son the Sacrifice; Of the griefs of man the Sharer, Of his soul the Ransom-price. ’Tis the Christ, the Ever-living, Ever-loving, Ever-blest, By the Comforter still giving Pardon, holiness, and rest. Can the love so freely given, Can the blood so freely shed, Fail to draw the earth to Heaven, Fail to bring alive its dead?   Lord, to Thee I make confession; I have sinned and gone astray, I have multiplied transgression, Chosen for myself my way. Led by Thee to see my errors, Lord, I tremble at Thy terrors. Yet, though conscience’s voice appall me, Father, I will seek Thy face; Tho’ Thy child I dare not call me, Yet receive me to Thy grace.   Th’abyss of many a former sin Encloses me and bars me in; Like billows my transgressions roll: Be Thou the Pilot of my soul, And to salvation’s harbor bring Thou Savior and Thou glorious King. My Father’s heritage abused, Wasted by lust, by sin misused; To shame and want and misery brought, The slave to many a fruitless thought, I cry to Thee, who lovest men, O pity and receive again!
